Janna Gregonis, Kutztown (PA) University assistant professor of Art Education, will be featured as one of five American artists at the upcoming 61st annual SCHMUCK Exhibition in Munich, Germany, for her jewelry inspired by post-WWII floor covering patterns.
She is one of only five American artists chosen to show her work at the exhibit, which takes place March 11-15th at the Munich Trade Fair Centre.
Of 802 goldsmiths and jewelry designers from more than 60 countries who applied to take part this year, only 63 artists were chosen to feature in the exhibition. Gregonis is a finalist for the Herbert Hofmann Prize, a “best in show” award for all art pieces included in the exhibition.
Gregonis’ current work and pieces featured in the event explore post-war American floor coverings and patterns. The inexpensive floor coverings that inspired her work mimicked luxurious carpets with their magnificent colors and patterns. Often overlooked and viewed as utilitarian, she has extracted the colors and patterns from the flooring to create a series of brooches.
